Lucy - I made that beef recipe of yours (plus more vege, as you've done here) a couple of weeks ago and it was absolutely delicious! I doubled the recipe and am delighted to say I still have rather a lot in the freezer, waiting to be delicious all over again. The addition of the tamarind is a very good idea. Yum.
I get milk and eggs every week from eketahuna country meats (and meat occasionally, but it’s not a staple). They are lovely. I do try to get fish at the supermarket from the display, not the prepackaged stuff; I like to think that helps?
The hobby piece was a revelation, thanks for sharing. I did have to think that for many men in that sovereign space it's the one place where they socialise - men can be pretty poor at socialising but one space where they can do so is in that space.
It's certainly illuminated how my family and friends do hobbies. How my father's sailing/duck shooting was sovereign and my mother, bless her, also did sovereign things - she did a degree at Bible College which required her to drive from Rotorua to Auckland each week for the week over a year. Dad was responsible for two boys during the week. He actually did a pretty good job of it - learnt to cook - we had weeks of steak and ratatouille in autumn because he liked it and learnt to cook it well. Soups or lamb chops/sausages in winter. Still, our mother was the better cook even if she claimed not to like doing so.
But thinking about my siblings. Interesting in light of the essay. Thinking about me - gay man - I did sovereign hobby - cycle touring - but I also do 'domestic' stuff - bc I live alone, so I cook well. I tried knitting, I have a bag of wool and I still would love to do a Kaffe Fasset design for a vest or jersey. One day I will.
In the absence of beef cheeks but an array of home kill beef cuts in the freezer what cut would you recommend for this please Lucy ? Thank you in advance

Oh brilliant news, I’m so happy to hear that. Plus dinner in the freezer = money in the bank!
Wow Lucy! Thank you for the share and very pleased that this was thought provoking for you! Wishing you much sovereign time :)

I think so! I mean, each to their own - ordering online isn’t necessarily right for everyone - but I like supporting small biz 👩🌾

It’s a great essay, I get something new from it each time I read it.

Hello Sally, how lucky you are to have a freezer like that. I think anything you would cook slowly will work - chuck steak, for example?
